Double win at SWBBA Contest

On Saturday 3rd November, St Dennis Youth and Senior Bands competed in the 61st Annual Championships of the South West Brass Band Association.

Both Bands prepared hard for the contest over the duration of the last few weeks. This resulted in great success as each band saw victory from their entered sections. The Adjudicator for the two sections was William Relton.

The Youth Band performed the set test piece, which was 'Newstead' by Goff Richards who was present in the audience. They were awarded 1st place with 192 points beating local rivals Mount Charles Youth Band. The prize for the Best Instrumentalist was awarded to Kimberley Bazeley (Euphonium) who amongst the other soloists of the band performed to a very high standard throughout. The adjudicator commented that there were many fine players throughout all sections within the band.

The Senior Band competed in the Open Section (Championship and First Section Bands) for the first time at the contest. The Band performed 'Diversions on a Bass Theme' by George Lloyd. They were announced winners of the section with 196 points, beating 7 other bands.

The members of the Bands would like to thank Musical Director Brian Minear for all the hard work he has put into preparing the Band for the contest.

Remarks (William Relton)

Opening Steady, 25- agile Euph. A great blend with the basses and troms later, confident playing and such care taken of the dynamics. 124- A great dim on S Drum. Fine Control. Great basses before 190. 220 - sonorous. 248 - Fine Troms - later basses came into their own. I'm enjoying this. 353 Excellent. 428 - A great FF 437 - and an ever more gripping end to this piece. Congratulations.
