The St Dennis Youth Band travelled to Manchester last weekend to compete at the National Youth Brass Band Championships. They competed in the community section against 13 other bands. With an early start to the day on Saturday, the two coaches departed for Manchester. The band and its supporters stayed at The Golden Tulip Hotel in Manchester which was a stone throw from Old Trafford Football Stadium.

The Band rehearsed at Eccles Band Room on the Saturday evening and Sunday morning (the day of the contest). Many thanks must go to the Eccles band for the use of their bandroom and also the welcoming atmosphere that they provided.

St Dennis Youth were drawn last to play and opened their programme in traditional form with “Marche Lorraine” by Louis Ganne. This was then followed by “Doyle’s Lament” from Call of the Cossacks performed beautifully by Zoe Hancock (Flugel Horn). The Band then played the set work for the section, which was “Scenes Du Lac” by Roy Newsome. They finished their performance with the lively "Wedding Dance" also from Call of the Cossacks by Peter Graham.

The Youth Band were awarded a Gold Award and 3rd place in the section. Zoe Hancock picked up the award for the Best Instrumentalist in the section.

Congratulations must go to Camborne Youth Band for winning the section. With 3 Cornish bands in the top 4 this does show great direction for Cornish Youth Bands.
