What a Day!

"Despite being the only entrants, the adjudicator felt he had to comment on the outstanding performance of "The Kingdom triumphant" performed by the Youth Band."

Both bands competed at the Cornwall Brass Band Association 52nd Annual Contest on Saturday (31st March) held at Truro Methodist Church. Both bands performed extremely well and excelled in their sections. Despite the Youth Band being the only entrants in the Youth Section, the adjudicator felt he had to comment on the outstanding performance of "The Kingdom triumphant" performed by the Youth Band. The Band played to an admirable standard which received good comments throughout the day.

CBBA St Dennis Youth BandCertain members of the Youth Band also gained the following Awards -

  • Best Instumentalist in theYouth Section (Kim Bazeley - Euphonium)
  • Best Soloist in theYouth Section (Odette Burdon - Soprano Cornet)
  • Best Percussion Section in the Junior/Youth Sections (St Dennis Youth)
  • Best Euphonium of the Day (Kim Bazeley - Euphonium)
  • Best Cornet of the Day (Francesca Bazeley - Principal Cornet)

The members of the bass section also were awarded 'The Best Bass Section of the day'

The Senior Band competed in the Open Entertainment Section. They performed a 25 minute programme which gained them a Truro CBBA Contest Trophieswell deserved First place. The band started with the famous Florentine March. This was followed by a Euphonium solo 'Benedictus' from the armed Man. This was performed beautifully by Kim Bazeley. Derek Broadbent stated that all of the soloists within the section performed well but he felt that Kim's solo was slightly more lyrical and therefore deserved to win the soloist prize for the section. He expressed to Kim that this was a very special Performance. The programme continued with the lively arrangement of 'Comedy Tonight' followed by Vitae Lux featuring top notch playing from Zoe Hancock (flugel) and Francesca Bazeley (principal cornet). To finish their programme, the band performed 'The Gael' from the Last of the Mohichans. This was a very effective close to the programme.

Thanks must go to Brian Minear for all the hard work he has put in for preparing both bands for the contest and Vivian Willcock for announcing the pieces during the programme.
